Chisel Cabinet - Day 4
With the carcass glued up and the back installed now is a good time to work on the actual tool holders for this cabinet. The system I use needs to be compact so I can fit as many chisels in there as possible, quick to get the tools in and out of and more importantly hold the chisels very securely (see the bit on the first day's post about sharp steel falling towards my face). After a lot of pondering and several tests I came up with this: ![]() It's a series of holes near the edge of the board with angled cuts made to into the edge of each hole to allow easy access in and out of the holder. For my socket chisels I used a 5/8" hole, which gave a nice snug fit for all the chisels. For my tang chisels I used 3/4" holes with a shallow 7/8" shoulder for the ferrules to fit into - see the second cut out from the right in the above picture. I have to admit now that I err, uhm, used my drill press this part. It was getting late you see and one of the few things machine tools do better than hand tools is when you have to the same thing over and over again like drilling a bunch of evenly spaced holes. For the actual tool holders I found a perfect piece of scrap, 5/4 thick poplar, about 2" wide. After drilling and cutting the cutouts for the chisels I cut a small shoulder onto either side of the holders so I could screw them into the case back. After installing the holding strip for the socket chisels I drilled and cut out the tang chisel holder and when I installed I made sure to leave enough room between the two strips to hold my big English mortise chisel Done! Well not quite. For one I still have a few more chisels that need a home, plus I displaced a bunch of tools living on the shelf that I put the new cabinet. I still need to build the doors and install a decorative top and base for the cabinet. Then more tool racks for the doors and some small boxes to go in the rack or attach inside the doors for holding chisels awaiting new handles and a few other small tools I want to store in here.
